13 Reasons why I’m a Mac Girl

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

I have nothing against PCs, but I love my Mac. Ever since I bought my first IMac back in 2001 I’ve been a Mac fiend. My current companion is a 12″ Powerbook, and it runs like a dream.

Just to be clear, I have no links with Apple. I just love their stuff.

1. They look great. If they didn’t work well this would not be a good enough reason to buy a Mac, but it’s just the sweet icing on a delish cake. From the cute IBooks of the early noughties to the G4 IMacs to the current range of goodies, Apple consistantly create sexy-looking computing objects. It’s no wonder that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s British design guru (who was responsible for the design of the IPod and IMac) was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). (Apparently the Queen uses an IPod.)

They don’t always hit the mark, (anyone remember the Flower-Power IMac?) but that’s the chance you take when pushing the envelope.

2. The IPod. No further explanation necessary.

3. No serious Mac viruses. Not cos they’re virus-proof, but mainly because hackers choose to focus on messing up Windows PCs as most people have them. Watch this ad for more info.

4. They just work. Once you liberate yourself from the Windows world, you see how simple life becomes when using a mac.

5. As all Macs are made by Apple, if a program or a gadget is compatible with your Mac, then it’s going to work with your Mac (unless something crazy is going on). You don’t have to think about whether your cheap internal DVD writer that you bought at the market is going to work with it.

6. Macs are made for creativity, which is why musicians, film-makers, designers and other artists choose to work with Apple. The Logic Pro/Express software for musicians and Aperture for photographers are examples of Apple’s commitment to working with professional creatives.

7. As well as catering for pros, Macs are also ideal for creative dabblers or dilettantes. Their ILife suite includes Garageband for music-making, IPhoto for messing with your pics, IWeb for creating websites, IMovie and IDVD for - you guessed it - making movies and creating DVDs. Fun stuff!

8. Apple Macs seem to inspire creativity in software programmers; check out these (mostly) free Mac programs. Ever wanted to create a comic book of your life? Also check out Pure Mac for loads more Mac programs.

9. If you’re worrying about how a Mac user can communicate in a Microsoft world - don’t! You can open and save MS Office documents. Most major software is available for both Windows and Mac, and if a program isn’t available for the Mac, the chances are that you can find something similar which will do the same job for you. If you really need to use Windows programs on your Mac, you can also use Virtual PC or Boot Camp. No worries.

10. Is it me, or is everyone on telly using a Mac?

What I especially like is when they try to hide the Apple logo…

11. Apple’s ads are always so COOL. My fave is that early IPod ad featuring “Mama” by the Black Eyed Peas.

I’m not entirely sure about the current UK ad campaign with Mitchell & Webb of Peep Show. Maybe it’s because I’ve watched a lot of Peep Show - it’s funny but slightly bizarre and I don’t know if Apple really want to be identified with the bonkers Jez character…

12. In 2004 I was lucky enough to be able to have a tour around the Apple HQ in California. It was so inspiring; I would love to work there. I wonder if Microsoft HQ has its own live Jazz Bar for its employees? Mr Jobs, bossman, if you’re reading this, I’d be happy to make your coffee or count your money, etc.

And last, but not least

13. Isn’t the forthcoming iphone a hot piece of ass?

I can understand why you’re a Mac Girl. I’ve worked with one too. Now I use a PC, both have pro’s and cons.
My TT lists 13 things in my handbag.

This is a great list- I have never used a Mac, but I keep hearing great things about it.

My list about pet peeves is here:

Fellow Mac girl here! I love my Mac — I need to replace my current iMac and invest in a newer one; maybe I’ll be able to this summer. Nothing wrong with this one (bought it in 2002) it’s just worked so well for so long, it’s time for it to enjoy retirement. Great list!

    PJ:

Very Interesting list. A lot of people I know have been encouraging me to get a Mac, but I had to settle for a (cheaper) PC when I needed a new computer earlier this year. Maybe someday I’ll be able to make the switch…
    Happy TT! :-)

Lots of things I didn’t know in this list. I have heard many people are getting mac’s. We still have a Dell…hey, got it at a discount!

    Sparky Duck:

I guess your Apple commercials are as good as ours. The Iphone makes me drool

  17. 17
    scooper:

I tried to use Mac one time and failed miserably. Must be why I have a Dell.

    Amanda:

I love the ad for the vibrator that hooks to your ipod thats friggen awesome. But I’m thinking about switching to mac the people at the stores are idiots though. They couldn’t tell me if i could tabb with safari and left me to figure it out on my own GAH!

  19. 19
    Amin:

    Oh man, I’m worried.

I understand exactly what you mean when you say the iPhone is one hot piece of ass. Or arse, as we say in the North of England.

It is, indeed, a highly desirable object. Lusting after it seems so…pervy somehow. Still, it was designed to be a “must have” item.

Now we just need to wait for it to his these shores. I’ll be in the queue…

    PJ:

    Hi Amanda,
I use tabs with Safari (the option is in your preferences). Otherwise the browser Firefox is well-established and also works with tabs. I hate when people don’t know what they’re selling, but I guess we can’t all be experts at everything.

Hey Amin, nice to see you back here again. I’m a Brit, but somehow in this context “ass” sounds sweeter than “arse” to me, although “arse” has its moments… I think it’s the sound of the A-R in the word which gives it that different feeling.

  21. 21
    Jane:

Well, I guess I can deduce that you love Macs…..is that right????!!!!
Thanks for coming by my T13.

    Mercy's Maid:

Every time I go to my local coffee shop, there are tons of people with identical Macs. I think the local college must encourage Mac use or something. :)

Thanks for stopping by my TT.

    Michelle Pillow:

I’m pretty sure my next computer’s going to be a Mac. Just as soon as I crash another laptop, lol

    Michelle Pillow:

Writers Block? For me I just switch what I’m working on (if i can, and deadlines aren’t looming as they tend to do, lol) And, if nothing flows, I work on promo, or design layouts, rebuild my website–something productive that isn’t writing. Then hopefully the muse is back when I’m done with the other project. That, or I read research books :)

    Debby:

I’m a Mac girl too! My husband converted me in 1996 and I’ve never looked back. Once you go Mac you never go back! I have the same lap top as you! Can’t wait for the IPhone, though. Happy Thursday and thanks for visiting my TT!

    Factor 10:

I want a Mac, but am afraid that I will forever be unhappy on PC’s thereafter! I have yet to talk to a Mac user who doesn’t love it.

When I get a laptop, I’ll make the switch!

  27. 27
    HighlandAmy:

While I do love the iPod and the hilarious Mac commercials… I’m not a big fan of the Mac itself. Which I readily admit is probably because having grown-up on PCs I haven’t a clue how to use Macs. So, since I can’ get them to do what I want - I’m a PC girl ;)

    Marcia:

I’m a Mac Girl, began as a physical attraction, but his personality and intelligence showed itself, so no going back — besides the iphone is hot! I will find a way to get it.

    Thanks for the software links.

    THE BLUEST BUTTERFLY:

I have an Inspiron Duo Core. I like it a lot. I have gotten so much use out of it. I have XP Media Edition….which is kind of animated acting….neat.

    Susan Helene Gottfried:

I almost became a Mac Girl years ago, back in college. Now that I’m married to a PC geek, though, I think I might be stuck. Plus, aren’t there issues with Word, between Macs and PCs? That doesn’t bode well for writers. :(

  31. 31
    amy:

Great list..I have a lot to learn

  32. 32
    Claire:

Ok you have sold me on the mac! its on my wish list now.

    Thanks for the visit.

This blog would make my Mac using husband very happy!!

  34. 34
    PJ:

    Hey all,

Susan: welcome back Mrs Musician, I’m afraid that you’ve been misinformed. I use MS Office for Mac and don’t have any problems sharing them with Windows users. You don’t even have to buy MS Office as there are some free/shareware programs which will open/save files in Word .doc format.

Yeah I love that advert with the BEP song on it too! Good stuff!

Wow, I feel old and out of it. I don’t have a Mac, never had an Apple, don’t have an iPod (don’t know what I’d do with one), never seen that cool-looking new phone.

I thought I was pretty hip having Razr! I’ve had mine for a long time now . . . well over a year. Now its seems that everyone has one and I’m just a boring conformist again.

    Oh, well . . . such is life! :-)
