13 Unseen or Partially-Seen Characters

Unseen

Some of the most interesting characters are the ones who are never on stage or only partially-seen. Here are some of my faves.

1. Ugly Naked Guy, Friends

Joey: Hey check it out. Ugly Naked Guy’s got a naked friend.
Rachel: Omigod. That’s our friend. It’s naked Ross.

Columbo

2. Columbo’s wife, Columbo

Sometimes I even wonder about my wife, not that she’s a crackpot.

Columbo

3. The Banker, Deal or No Deal (UK)

The Banker is a real person! I am now being asked all the time whether there is somebody on the phone and I’ve been accused of pretending that I’m talking to nobody. The truth is that The Banker is a very dry, extremely astute number cruncher. He watches the player very closely and obviously wants them to go away with as little money as possible. He is not somebody I would wish to socialise with. Noel Edmonds

Deal or No Deal

4. Sir Royston Merchant, Drop The Dead Donkey

[Gus and Helen are watching footage of Sir Royston Merchant having sex] Recognise that bottom, Gus? You should do, you’ve kissed it often enough.

Dead Donkey

5. Charlie, Charlie’s Angels

Once upon a time there were three little girls who went to the police academy - two in Los Angeles, the other in San Francisco - and they were each assigned very hazardous duties. But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is Charlie.

Charie's Angels

6. Maris (Nile’s wife), Frasier

Tom: Wait a minute. This Maris guy he kept mentioning is a woman?”
Frasier: Well, the jury is still out on that one.

Frasier

7. Lewis (Margaret’s husband), Becker

I love my husband, most of the time.

Becker

8. Stan Walker (Karen’s husband), Will & Grace

Jack: So, K, how’s it going with the divorce? Do we know what we’re getting yet?
Karen: Well, we’ll find out next week after the hearing, but I’m not worried. All we have to do is show that Stan cheated on me - which the filthy pig did - no hard feelings - may he rot in hell - I love him to pieces - the fat turd. And I get half of everything.

Karen Walker

9. George Steinbrenner (George’s Yankees boss), Seinfeld

[a bomb-diffusing robot opens a drawer in George's desk, revealing a Playboy and some candy bars]
George Steinbrenner: So… it’s just empty calories and male curiosity, eh, Georgie?

Seinfeld

10. Mammy Two-Shoes, Tom & Jerry

Now this, Mister Thomas, is your last and final chance! Either you keep dat mouse out of the refrigerator, or you is goin’ out! Is that clear?

Mammy

11. Dr Claw, Inspector Gadget

I’ll get you next time, Gadget. Next time!

Dr Claw

12. Wilson, Home Improvement

Tim: Wilson, are you naked?
Wilson: No, Tim, I am wearing a hat.

Wilson

13. Sara Bellum (the mayor’s secretary), Powerpuff Girls

Bubba: What’s your sign?
Ms. Bellum: Stop.

Sara Bellum

Honorable mentions:
Mom & Dad, Cow & Chicken
The Senior Partners, Angel

Great idea for a TT… I liked the varied mix of characters that you selected. I may have to use this for one of mine in the future.

I was surprised to see one of my favorite shows (Becker) represented. That show is so underrated in my opinion.

I read that the producers of Frasier toyed with the idea of having Maris appear onscreen. I am glad that they decided not to because after all that we had heard about Maris, no actress could have lived up to what us viewers had envisioned.

    Sue:

Great list idea!!! Hehehe I used to know someone who fit the Maris description, which made the character even funnier for me despite her invisibility on the show. I pictured her as the person I knew. Cheers!

This was a fun list to read, one that we joke about here is Richie’s older brother on Happy Days who went upstairs one day to never come down.

Great list! Awesome idea for a 13. I didn’t realize Deal or No Deal started in the UK. Thanks for checking out my 13 too. Have a happy Thursday.

What a cool idea! Love it, PJ!

    Nicholas:

Brilliant TT! That’s the first picture of Noel Edmonds I’ve seen for about 8 years. He’s knocking on a bit isn’t he! Over here, Deal or No Deal is compered by a slaphead!

Can I suggest 2 more honourable mentions? Carlton the Doorman from “Rhoda” and Mrs Arthur Daley (’er indoors) from “Minder”. But of course you are far too young to remember either of those shows.

    Nicole Austin:

Wow, great list! I’ve never considered how many there but not there characters exist.
    Happy TT!

What a brilliant idea for a T13. I was trying to think of other characters who never show up….but Nicholas has already named “Carlton your doorman.”

We also never see any adults in the charlie brown cartoons - just their “mwaa mwaa mwaa mwaa mwaaa mwaaa” voice. LOL

Great idea for a list. The only 2 that popped into my head right away were Wilson from Home Improvement and Mrs. Columbo (it used to drive me nuts that we never got to see her). I don’t even know some of the others, but I’m impressed that there are so many apparently well-known (except by me) characters that you never actually get to see.

    The Gal Herself:

I came by yesterday but didn’t leave a comment because I couldn’t remember her name … you know, from Cheers … Norm’s wife … we never saw her but she used to call the bar all the time … AHA! VERA! She was kinda the sitcom Mrs. Columbo.

  21. 21
    Matt Savage:

Haha, I love it. I would also add in Bob Sacamono from Seinfeld as well.

  22. 22
    L-Squared:

LOL! What a fun variety of TV shows and a great list!

  23. 23

I’m singing “I’m the invisible man” from Queen. Great list! :-) Thanks for visiting my IJmuiden TT.

  24. 24
    Mama Pajama:

Very cool list. The best one I’ve read so far today….Maris, Stan, where are they? Have a great week!

  25. 25
    china blue:

Oh, that’s good, PJ. Enjoyed that!

I loved when Maris was once referred to as ‘Frosty the Snow-wife’ by Martin. Frasier is class.

  26. 26
    Mark Caldwell:

Great idea for a TT :-)
I’m trying to remember the name of the character from the Archers that has never been heard but who has featured in many story lines and even had a surprise birthday party with her being called to give a speach (at which point the end title music played after we heard someone drawing a breath)

  27. 27
    Christine:

That was a great list! I never realized how many unseen characters there were out there!

  28. 28
    Natalie:

    Very cool list!

    Sophisticated Writer:

I’ve always wanted to see Maris on Frasier (one of my all time favorite shows). Would have been awesome and equally hilarious :)
And of course George Steinbrenner on Seinfeld. Right, Georgie?

How are you? Been a while since I last read you on my blog.

  31. 31
    Liane Spicer:

This was FUN! I’m also a great Becker fan, and this dates me, but Carlton the doorman is my all time favourite.

    [Buzzer goes off]
    Rhoda: Yes, Carlton.
Carlton: Hello… This is Carlton your doorman…

    Every goddamn time!
