Using the book you are currently reading:

1. Take the book. Turn to page 123.
2. Skip 5 sentences.
3. Post the next three sentences.

I’m currently reading The Good Husband of Zebra Drive by Alexander McCall Smith

good husband of zebra drive

Here’s the excerpt:

She reached across and laid a hand upon his wrist. He looked down at where her hand rested.
“You mustn’t be sad, Rra,” she said.

Visible Darkness by Jonathan King

I stopped and got out, assessing the way a stealthy man on foot might have approached. The alley-side street lamp was a jagged cone of broken glass. From here he would have been able to see the windows of the back bedroom, but not the front, where Ms. Thompson might have discreetly let her man in.

I like the way presenting just a few sentences throws the entire story out of context. Also, I read somewhere that if you are low on writing inspiritation, copy the favourite passage of a favourite book. That way you write the words the author did, and you get a real feel for the way the use language. It’s a way of walking in their shoes

Liane: that book sounds really good, think I’ll have to add it to my to-read list.

China: that’s a great idea, about copying passages to get the author’s style. Many writing teachers say that trying to write like a favourite author is a good way of isolating style in order to eventually find your own voice.
