Paypal Pirates
Thursday, May 29th, 2008Paypal has taken to sending me emails about money laundering since I’ve had more than £650 going through my account since I don’t know when. So I’ve sold some of my old stuff on ebay and get the odd affiliate payment from another website, so what? It’s not like I’m smuggling suitcases full of dirty cash into the continent via Easyjet.
So now under the guise of these European Union Anti-Money Laundering regulations I need to provide Paypal with access to my bank account. Mmmm, it may be time to restrict my online transactions. I don’t like all this bureaucracy, and I don’t like the thought of Paypal having access to my bank account information. It smells like Big Brother to me.

Is this a brilliantly subtle post about phishing suckers? If not, just give me your bank info and I will make sure PayPal does not use it improperly.
Or does the European Union really require you to give your bank info to anybody you did a transaction with? That seems unimaginable, which means it might just be normal for that outgrown bureaucracy.

Ha ha, it’s not a phish attempt, though at first I did wonder. Now when I log in to Paypal I get aggro about having “unresolved issues” on my account. I’ve done some research and it seems that I’m in danger of having Paypal limit my account (and prevent any further spending or receipt of funds) until they decide that I’m not a money smuggler masquerading as a small-time ebayer.

I’ve never fully trusted PayPal - call me a cynic, but I’ve always had the sneaking suspicion that there’s more there than meets the eye…
I could be wrong.
But then, I am the mightiest of men…

That’s bullshit. Seriously, those kinds of emails are not from Paypal, they are from people trying to steal your money and or Paypal info.

Hey Dr M, no it actually was Paypal. I logged into my account directly by typing the url into my browser bar, and the same message popped up. In the end I sorted things out by confirming my phone number with them. I can smell a phish a mile away, let me tell ya.
